Year 2010: Charging your mobile phone with water
Samsung: “Get Ready for Water-Powered Cell Phones”
Source: CNET.com.au
Samsung Electro-Mechanics has developed a micro-fuel cell and hydrogen generator that runs on water.
Oh Yong-soo, the vice president of Samsung Electro-Mechanics’ research centre, said that when the handset is turned on, “metal and water in the phone react to produce hydrogen gas”.
The gas is then supplied to a hydrogen cartridge - which reportedly needs replacing after about 5 days constant use. At this stage - that’s a major hiccup. On one hand, we’re “saving the environments resources”; on the other, we’re producing a non-rechargable cartridge.
Don’t worry! Samsung say they will have a better alternative down the track, maybe one that means you should be able to just top up your mobile as needed.
So - I’m wondering if by 2010, they will have already also fine tuned that feature?!
