Drivers using SMS not getting the message
In a police blitz in NSW last week, more than 1,100 drivers were fined for using their mobile phones whilst driving.
Operation Compliance netted 1199 phone-using motorists, with each being fined $243
There figures are simply not good enough and indicate that motorists are not taking the message that driving whilst on the phone is dangerous and could cost lives“. Chief Superintendent John Hartley
Remember the days when your mobile phone was not more important than someone’s life?
The world will not stop revolving if we don’t respond to a call or text immediately.
Although more than 1,100 were fined, mobile industry leaders questioned the effectiveness of mass blitzes. Anne Morphett from NRMA said,
It might get the message to the thousand people who were caught but it doesn’t do much for other people,” she said.
So, how do we make the message more clear?
- Increase the fines?
- Add demerit points?
How many more innocent people have to be injured or die?
If you have any ideas on what it takes to make reckless drivers more aware, considerate and responsible for their own actions, we’d love to hear your comments.
