DDA4Me: New music format

DDA USB albums = DDA not for me..?

Bridging the gap between the physical and digital music worlds

If you love change – and new gadgets, you may be excited by the new format of purchasing music launched yesterday.

On 1 December, 2008 a new option openned up for both consumers of music, and the producers of the music they love, when Sneaky Sound System and Gurrumul, amongst others, release their current albums on the revolutionary new DDA format.”

Each album released in the DDA format will be sold on a rubber stylised DDA USB stick, complete with an artist ’swing tag’.  Tracks are provided in MP3 or WAV formats to avoid compatibility issues.

As well as music, each DDA album provides access to online content such as album art, song lyrics, photos, news, music videos, updates from the band and social networking.

Each DDA will feature its own player, track list builder, media transfer unit (to transfer playlists to iTunes > iPods and burn to CD – all supposedly without licensing problems).

Consumers can access their content (myDDA) from mobile phones, plus music & forum news on their own mobile myDDA application, so from any internet connected computer.

So, who’s behind this funky new music format?

Whilst all the extra content etc is very very cool (and I’m not adverse to change) … I’m not sure I’ll be a convert at this stage.

I’d be more inclined had they decided to put it out in the same shape/size as a CD case, so that if a music lover decided to go down the DDA path, at least they could still tidily file the DDA albums away in the same rack – and in alphabetical order?!

That’d really help a borderline obsessive-compulsive… ;)

I think if artists like Sneaky Sound System are going to support the format by providing extra content then it’s bound to do well.

There’s a You Tube vid with more details here: http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=IvPT9atdHRw

Thanks. I’m not doubting the success at all, just how I will store it on my CD rack… :)
