“And why you should have one…”
Whilst I’m normally excited by brand new shiny things like iPods and other MP4s, there’s also a lot to be said about including a second hand MP3 player in your collection.
And, don’t think second hand, think “pre-loved”…
“Why you ask?”
Many uses spring to mind. Here’s just a few:
- Using in dodgy suburbs, when you don’t want to get jumped for your ’stand-out-like-dogs-b***s’ white earphones;
- Being able to ignore people. Just pop in the earphones and appear to be too engrossed in your music to talk / answer / listen
- Capturing celebrities drunken murmurings when you’re out and about (thanks, voice recorder); or
- Logging your investigations and findings during a covert operation;
- Sneakily listening to Triple J on the job site when “no radios are allowed” (so small it fits in any pocket); or
- Setting the alarm and hiding it under your flat mates pillow to wake them at all sorts of odd hours
- Ummm, playing up to 17 hours of your favourite digital music? Just a thought…
So then where would you find such a beast to do all that?

“Reviews for the current MP3 players”
PC World have reviewed the top ten flash-based MP3 players - and given their ratings between 0 to 100.
As we know, technology changes very quickly and lists such as these are always being superceded. However if you’re about to buy a new iPod or MP3 player, why not see which ones they think are the best – based on features, design, performance and price.
Overview of the PC World rankings:
- Currently heading the list is the 32GB Creative Zen, with a rating of 83 (very good)!
- Apple fans can be appeased with third and fourth spots for the 3G iPod nano and iPod touch;
- Whilst not to be forgotten is Sansa, with three different Sandisk MP3s being listed in the Top 10.
“How do you rate these MP3 players?”
Do you think these MP3 players stand up to the testing and reviews? Do you already own one? Which do you think is actually the best? Let us know.

How much “pod slurping” have you done recently?
Sounds a little like gobbledygook, doesn’t it?! But if you’re moving with the times, it’s possible that “pod slurping”, “infomania” and “password fatigue” are all time-zapping parts of your life.
Macquarie Dictionary decided pod slurping was their word of the year – and that, along with others will be included in the yearly update of the dictionary.
So, what do those words even mean?
- Pod slurping (n): the downloading of large quantities of data from PC to an MP3 player or memory stick
- Infomania (n): the tendency to give immediate attention to incoming sms and emails, causing constant distraction and lower attention levels and work performance (shouldn’t they include Facebook in their causal descriptions?)
- Password fatigue (n): The level of frustration caused by having too many different passwords to remember, resulting in an inability to remember even those most commonly used (we’ve all done this..)
